Jim enjoys one of the highlights of his career so far, picking up the cup for "Songwriter of the Year" in the Scots Traditional Music Awards, held in the Queen's Hall, Edinburgh, on Dec 3, 2004 On a rare break from touring, Jim escapes with his kind host Bob for a few hours of fantastic fishing from a canoe. And it's true, he even caught a few trout - you can see the evidence. Straight from America to Berlin in May 2005, but there was some time to relax at the home of ex-pat Kirkcaldy loon Keith Melville. Here's Jim working on his world cup song "Hurtin' in Berlin", recorded in Jan/Feb 2006.

One of the highlights of 2005 was buying this double bass from Germany, great to be able to play this favourite instrument again.

Ah, the mighty River Tay, where it runs through Perth - about ten minutes' walk from home. The long hot summer of 2005 at home was fantastic, time to wander about by riverbanks and through the countryside around Perth. Here I'm on Kinnoull hill, which gets a mention in my new song "Blindness of my youth". Susie misses out verses 34 and 35 of a 92-verse Bothy Ballad Muckin' the Barnyards of Tifty, at the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina, July 2003. You know the ballad - it's the one where Ticky Tam, the farmer's boy, is sent to Huntly for a long stand and a tin of tartan paint.

Poor Cathie Ryan has to endure the hot-housed warblings of yet another precocious child - Oh, it's my daughter Elizabeth...well, that's all right then. Beth makes her debut at Swannanoa. Beth competing in the World Puff-a-box championships at the Glenfarg Folk Feast, April 03. The object is to propel an empty box of Scottish Bluebell matches. Folk Festival officials watch closely for illegal tactics. The female world record was broken in this year - though not by cowgirl Beth.
